A couple of notes from "one who was there."
I worked at FDGH from a couple months before we opened until Chet could no longer keep pumping money in and the venue passed to other hands.
At various times I worked the doors (ticketed and guest list door), swamped out the place, stage managed and announced, assisted with sound reinforcement (PA).
[Please don't @ me with little detail questions like "who was playing drums during the after hours jam on Sunday night, the 30th of February. Odds are I do NOT remember.]
So, my feedback here:
First, a HUGE "thank you" to JGMF for emphasizing the correct venue name. We were always "The Family Dog ON the Great Highway," never "AT."
Take a look at any contemporaneous posters and handbills, advertisements, newspaper stories and listings. Nobody ever, in my hearing called us "AT." And we (Chester included) certainly never used that name.
I don't know when and where it was coined, but it's been promulgated on the internet in recent years by far too many folks too young to actually remember, but ought to know better, including the "official" custodians of the Dead's tape vault and the folks over at Internet Archive.
So, there's that.
And Corry, I need to correct you on a couple deets. First, Whitney's Playland at the Beach (commonly known as "Playland" for short) was very much still in operation during the time we were there. Not to put too fine a point on it, but it was the Playland management who leased the 660 Great Highway building to us.
And here's the other thing. I'm not sure where the assertion that Bear "was the house soundman" comes from. This is the first time I've ever heard that suggested. Seems like I would remember (for obvious reasons).
That's pretty much it. There is a bit more backstory to the Lenny Hart hustle, but that's something for another time and place.beachdog67https://www.blogger.com/profile/09887850845423627424noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-4061160324554917082018-11-08T06:42:56.448-08:002018-11-08T06:42:56.448-08:00In comments at my place, LIA says it's not JJ....In comments at my place, LIA says it's not JJ. I have had time to listen to this (once!) and this is profoundly historically interesting stuff. I hope to be able to reply at greater length, some day.

I am thrilled to have this release. Thanks to all involved in getting it out. It's quite illuminating.

At the risk of sounding like a quibbling picky Deadhead, let me throw out some reactions to the release qua release.

First, the metadata around the venue is unfortunate, if not strictly "wrong". I want to reinforce for your readers, Corry, your appelation, which I think is more "correct".

The venue given in the release is "Family Dog At The Great Highway". Now, I recognize a certain amount of fluidity in what a place was (or should be) "called" (by whom? in what context? for what purposes? etc.). The pursuit of false precision is ugly. But here I think correct precision is possible.

When he first got the lease on the place, Chet Helms held a press conference. Here's what he said:

I have applied for and received a dance permit to open at 660 Great Highway –the northernmost building at Playland, formerly a slot car raceway – and I shall call it ‘Family Dog On The Great Highway’. (1)

Chet Helms was a man, not an oracle. But this kind of oracular pronunciation, by this particular person, must hold considerable historical weight. The "I shall" seals it for me. I uniformly call it this in all of my data. Again, I recognize that on any given night it might have been called any number of things by any number of people, including Chet, but I think the power of his pronouncement combined with the benefits of systematization around such crucial metadata have to govern us here.

Certainly no big deal, but blogs are good for making mountains out of molehills.

Second, the packaging is physically sturdy, but the outside art didn't really reproduce in a visually appealing way. The color scheme doesn't work very well for me, the color reproduction is pretty bad, and the skeleton image is blurry (not to good effect). There's nothing thematically original in the imagery. I don't want to be critical of the artist, because I am sure this reflects in some good measure the constraints under which he was working. Things feel a little bit "rushed" to me.

I wish they had used the Tuten handbill! I guess I can imagine why that was not possible, but it's a real shame.
For me the Tuten is absolutely brilliant and amazing, a real pleasure to ponder.

De gustibus non disputandum est and all that, just my perspective.

Third, David Lemieux's notes are fine, but I want more (I guess that's why we have you)! I think he appropriately focuses on the historical interest of the event, rather than the quality of the performances. They're more interesting than great, but they're fine. The story of the tapes is cool. I guess I just love this stuff and want more!

Fourth the photos, credited to Stu Levy, are amazing. Again: more, please and thank you!

Bottom line: really glad to have this ... let's open up those vaults, including pix, recollections, etc. etc.!

Reference
(1) Blakey, Scott. 1969. The point I take from it is that Spencer heard NRPS play "Dirty Business" and heard a lot of potential in the band.

But just to run through the problems: it is persistent NRPS mythology, encouraged by all band members (including JG), that the Riders opened a lot of Dead shows with Phil Lesh on bass, and that simply isn't true. The only time that Phil played with NRPS at the Family Dog when they opened for the Dead was August 29-20, 1969, well before Spencer left the Airplane.

Spencer's last gig with the Airplane was February 4, 1970. Most likely Spencer saw NRPS at the Family Dog on March 18, 1970 or else the April shows. March 18 may have had Phil on bass (it is too tangled a subject for a Comment), but Torbert was on board by April.

Of course, in any case Spencer didn't play with the New Riders until December 1970 (Dec 12 '70 at Santa Rosa, most likely), which throws his entire account into confusion, as by December Owsley was in jail and the FDGH long closed.

"Dirty Business" must have been good, though.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-72810928239544085552013-11-23T10:16:51.094-08:002013-11-23T10:16:51.094-08:00Just came back across this:
Kahlbacher 1974, 14: ...Just came back across this:

Kahlbacher 1974, 14: Dryden’s entry into NRPS: “The tune ‘Dirty Business,’ actually, made me join the Riders. I was leaving the Airplane, and McIntyre [sic] and Owsley came down to the big house [the Airplane House] … and said ‘You really should see the New Riders. I think you might be able to help them out’. But I was thinking of producing, not playing. I was tired. I’d been through that before. But I went down to see them [NRPS] at the Family Dog on the beach, on the Great Highway … At the time the drummer for the Riders was Mickey Hart, and they also have Phil Lesh and Jerry Garcia. So the thing was, I wasn’t doing anything, and Mickey was looking for his own trip which culminated in his producing a solo album, Rolling Thunder.”

Kahlbacher, Gene. 1974.
