However, Bear did not break his leg... it was his arm. The main problem with that was that his only mode of transportation at the time was a Vintage BMW motorcycle. Bear, our friend Charles and I were in my VW van that day and when he fell and was taken to hospital, I wondered if he would be back for a ride home. Of course he came back with his arm in a cast and didn't let it slow him down.Isabellehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04600105151592776574noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-13917592951249141062020-12-10T10:12:16.392-08:002020-12-10T10:12:16.392-08:00I remember hearing Donna and hating every minute o...I remember hearing Donna and hating every minute of jtStevehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15174846063061042890noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-86181125807224774892020-11-05T16:23:50.899-08:002020-11-05T16:23:50.899-08:00HAHAHA

I included just about his entire email in the post above. It's full of yet another amazing perspective--among many other things, the Dead's crew tried to persuade the Beach Boys to use the Wall Of Sound. With every LZ note clearly audible 1 mile behind the stage. Opening acts were "The Tubes", "Lee Michaels", "Roy Harper". In that order. The gates were not supposed to open until 10:00 AM. We were so crushed up against the gates at 6:00 AM they opened the gates at 6:15. The Tubes probably started playing about 10:00. I think they played everything they knew. Maybe a few more. When Roy was done BG came out and said "Led Zepplin is on the tarmac in LA you fuckers. Sit back and relax. It's going to be a while." I was at the Oakland Stadium and spent the night there in one of the entry tunnels. Having been to the Kezar shows I realized being early meant being close. The bands all did sound checks except the Dead, They played songs and things were adjusted and after an hour or so left, then The Beach Boys came and it was more of a practice session for the album Holland. The would start, restart, play and replay songs and it got downright boring. So the band was there in Oakland, I guarantee that, I think what Ned said was true and it was more fear and laziness the the excuses given. When the BB's set ended and the Deads was going to begin, there was a rush for each fan base to either leave or move up front. There was peace throughout the day but when the rush of BB fans left you could tell that they had had enough. The OMG get me outta here attitude was very prevalent. Might have been the acid or maybe they ran out of beer. I enjoyed all of the show because I was raised to appreciate all forms of music and to not be a music nazi. great postingsTimhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10255552775233507770noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-91873364550424842482013-05-13T14:34:41.227-07:002013-05-13T14:34:41.227-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.beachgalhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06465511737750316429noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-48046857627632023302013-04-03T22:51:41.998-07:002013-04-03T22:51:41.998-07:00Coincidentally, a Billboard article on the Dead...Coincidentally, a Billboard article on the Dead's plans dated 6/8/74 says:
"Phil Lesh has also had a computerized synthesizer made which will play 'space' music during concerts at half time."

So although the Phil & Ned sets didn't start until 6/23/74, this shows they were definitely in the works weeks beforehand.
It's quite possible Ned attended the first few shows of the tour (6/16, 18, 20, 22), before he & Phil felt ready.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-9321417634350962862012-09-21T01:52:13.953-07:002012-09-21T01:52:13.953-07:00WOW! I was at the Oakland concert as well....
I was 20 years old and had been following the Dead for about 3 years prior.

I don't remember to much after the acid kicked in but here are a few things I do remember.

The Wall of Sound was amazing... the tones and vibrations felt like they were tuning every cell of your body. There wasn't any place you could go to escape the sound... it filled the entire place, even into the parking lot.

The Dead created their magic that day... the entire crowd was captivated into one surrealistic dream wave. Everyone was moving in concert with one another... it was like watching a huge field of grass blowing in tune with the wind... Nothing was out of place... it all made sense.

The air was filled with a mist of dirt from people dancing on the outer track and smoke from all the pot. It really added to the dream like state along with the heat...

The last thing I remember before I spaced out was a naked girl running through the crowd being chased by a naked guy and another naked guy just standing there pissing in his boot.
It put a real smile on my face as I drifted
up and into another reality.

By the time I re-entered reality, the Dead were still playing, it was about 7:10 pm and the crowd was still moving like one big wave.

Thanks for the memories.

David :)

Hot Trends Todayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10267983487949584828noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-59998393089716415562012-08-07T15:00:59.229-07:002012-08-07T15:00:59.229-07:00I was at the Grateful Dead Kezar show in 73 and th...I was at the Grateful Dead Kezar show in 73 and the Led Zep show the following week. (so maybe he only sang and did not play mandolin that day when sitting in?) He also says that he was in fact a co-writer of "Teardrops in my Eyes" along with Red Allen and Noah Crase but he was not credited for some of the songs he wrote with Red Allen. Actually Frank says Red's wife Claire actually came up with the words but Red, Frank and Noah all worked up the music. Tommy Sutton was apparently someone who helped Red do the publishing. Frank's extensive and prolific backlog of original compositions (with and without lyrics) lend credibility to his claim of co-authorship of this and several other classics thought of as Red Allen songs.Hedley Kowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01777270438441695701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-70664531537998635252012-05-25T02:22:29.892-07:002012-05-25T02:22:29.892-07:00This comment has been removed by the author.Hedley Kowhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01777270438441695701noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-48309476947740181242012-01-25T11:10:52.934-08:002012-01-25T11:10:52.934-08:00Yeah, the sights and sounds were getting pretty bl...Yeah, the sights and sounds were getting pretty blurred for me as the Dead jammed on and on.

Go ahead and download the pics. In the later 70s there was another great run of outdoor summer shows worth noting. Starting with the great 9/3/77 show at Raceway Park, there were annual Labor Day extravaganzas on the East Coast. On 9/2/78 it was Giants Stadium with Willie Nelson. On 9/1/79 it was Holleder Stadium, Rochester with the Good Rats (apparently a disaster for the Rats!).
And finally on 9/6/80, the great Lewiston Fairgrounds show with Roy Buchanan & Cate Browthers w/Levon Helm.
