I have a recording from a friend of 1/13/1980 and I got to tell you that although short and compact the music was smoking. It sounds like more than Bill and Mickey on drums which goes off into a wild rush of great guitar jam and the NFA into Sugar Magnolia was off the chart. Just an amazing show but as stated no overly cosmic songs but songs where there is never any error!Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02605138536335528707noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-63576968938063691822020-08-30T23:10:05.460-07:002020-08-30T23:10:05.460-07:00Hi. Starship was decent 1980 arena rock and loud. Fortunately I saw that set grom behind the stsge sk the ears were spared. The Dead were just fine but the guitars of Cippolina and Santana were virtually inaudible. The whole thing felt kind of thrown together. I do not recall having an assigned seat and saw different acts from different positions.KingKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15986053670004620396noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-83896621040553809542017-05-30T22:52:47.279-07:002017-05-30T22:52:47.279-07:00Fun with Dick and Jane was not the Kampuchea show ...Fun with Dick and Jane was not the Kampuchea show but Keith and Donna's last gig in '79.Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03873957741011073729noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-38384710968063177212017-05-08T21:18:46.073-07:002017-05-08T21:18:46.073-07:00Saw the show. I remember it like it was yesterday.

Though a Deadhead, I loved the Beach Boys too, and had never seen them perform. I was absolutely astonished when I saw Brian come out with the band. Little did I know...

Mike Love announced they were going to do the old Chuck Berry tune, "Rock and Roll Music," because, as Mike rather smarmily remarked, "We all love rock and roll music." Pause. "Right, Brian?"

No response.

"Brian...?"

Brian, softly: "Yeah."

Mike: "Well, Brian, how does it go?"

Silence.

"Briiiiiaaaannnn..."

Silence.

Mike, playing to the crowd the whole time: "Can you AT LEAST give us the first verse--- BRIAN????"

Brian, staring down at the keys, haltingly whispers out the words, pausing many times, but he gets them right:
"I got no kick against modern jazz/Unless they try to play it too darn fast."

Mike: "That's it, let's go!" and they launch into the song.

I was mortified. Somebody ought to have pulled a "Pete Townshend" on that SOB and swatted him off the doggone stage. Generally speaking it was the job of college radio to be about whatever was ultra cool and weird at that exact moment in time (in my day, a few years earlier, it had been Progressive Rock in its most irritating and way out fashion). A few highlights that I recall:

- A huge hand-lettered sign above one of the entrances to the floor, reading "Old Wave".

- Mike Love of the Beach Boys drunk off his ass and making terribly asinine stage banter, at one point dedicating "Be True to your School' to the Cambodian refugees. Brian Wilson a hulking statue at the piano.

- The Jefferson Starship earsplittingly loud, to the point of my really being unable to hear well for the remainder of the night. Craig Chaquico doing skateboard-style jumps off his amp while playing guitar.

- The Dead playing pretty badly out of tune for the whole set, uncharacteristically. Maybe Jerry/Phil were also deafened by the Starship (although if they weren't in the hall at the time, no excuse).

- My first Dead show of many at the Coliseum Arena.

My sister was a KZSU DJ, I'll have to ask her about the Beatles thing, although she was a New Waver, sharing airtime with Daniel Pearl. 90.1 FM.

I also have a radio tape. I haven't listened to it for years - I'll have to go dig it up.Fred Levitanhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14122238322524363801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-89816174184235170132014-12-08T05:23:38.402-08:002014-12-08T05:23:38.402-08:00Thank you.
