One attendee also remembers Uncle John's Band and Cumberland Blues, which are probable, and maybe Attics. But there was almost certainly no acoustic set. Most people's memories are vague, but they agree on a strong Workingman's Dead/American Beauty vibe ("gentle music even when rockin'," "laid-back and cowboy even when tearing it up").
Another attendee recalls the Dead doing the Stones' song Connection, but most likely this was part of the New Riders' set.Abrohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13278562688887538752noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-62205870275923032112022-01-05T13:37:48.514-08:002022-01-05T13:37:48.514-08:00Would you be able to post a picture of the ticket ...Would you be able to post a picture of the ticket stub or email me a photo? Here's an archive of the college paper (Quo Vadis) from November 1970 with an advertisement for this Grateful Dead and New Riders of the Purple Sage concert, tickets costing $3.50 for students and $5.00 for outsiders: http://digital.middlesexcc.edu/AA00001489/00001/4j

Here's a newspaper article in the next issue written after the concert that discusses what it was like and includes a photo: http://digital.middlesexcc.edu/AA00001491/00001/4j

"Concert draws capacity crowd" is the title. The college may have a copy in its archives. The concert was initially MCC students & guests only but the MCC student body was only about 10-15% “freaks” and after the initial rush ticket sales were opened to the local community. This decision was made without the Dean of Students knowledge & he was persuaded as people were lined up outside to relax the MCC students & guests policy, he was understandably frightened about outlaw biker gangs crashing the show. After Gary Puckett we weren’t going To allow the committee To book Oliver for the next concert, we essentially had a takeover of the committee & I was elected president. We built a stage which was about 3 feet off the gym floor & I remember having a huge argument with the dean of students as he was directing students to put chairs in straight rows on the gym floor. In addition the dean (I think his name was Foos) was frightened about the Angels coming in and starting a riot, that is how I finally persuaded him to allow concert goers to sit on the floor,I told him if there was a disturbance the first thing that was going to be thrown or used as a weapon were the chairs. I also suggested that most of the people would be standing.
I introduced both the New Riders & the Dead, they used the boys locker room to dress & tune up before the show, before the Dead went on I remember seeing about an ounce of weed on a guitar case & it was I think Lesh cleaning it & about to roll a joint when a NJ State Trooper came through the room, how he didn’t see it is still one of my life’s biggest mysteries!! One of the Dead’s roadies had a great cowboy hat on & I remember him selling it to someone sitting near the stage.
Both acts were paid a total of $7000 & the sound was $1000 or $1500, I remember initially talking with the booking agent & was shocked that we could get the New Riders & the Dead for a bargain price.
Both acts were fantastic,I don’t remember what songs were played mostly because I was toking up along with most of the audience, I do remember talking with Jerry before the show, he seemed surprised that a small JUCO from Central Jersey hired them, we shared a joint & a beer.
