It says:
"The new development is Garcia, old friends John Dawson and David Nelson, and fellow Grateful Dead musicians Phil Lesh, bassist, and Mickey Hart on drums. They're known as the 'New Riders of the Purple Sage.'
The New Riders recently cut a demonstration tape for Warner-Reprise, and the present schedule often finds the Dead playing on weekends, the 'New Riders' on weekdays.
'They're going all around to various beer houses and country & western, folk oriented, collegiate type places,' [road manager] MacIntire said. 'But the ideal is to book them into hard-core country redneck places where they can get the feedback they need from the people who really know country-western music.'" (David Harris, "Rock's First Family: Grateful Dead," Circus 3/70)

Some points of interest here:
- it mentions a demo made for Warners, presumably our Nov '69 demo tape. And presumably Warners turned them down.
- it says Phil Lesh is the current bassist.
- it suggests the New Riders are regularly playing on weekdays in between Dead shows, and even has a quote from the Dead's tour manager affirming that they're currently active & playing.

So: where were they playing? Phil was apparently still onboard, and from this account, it's hard to believe that the New Riders really only played one gig in winter 1970.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-28076106674121642662015-06-24T22:16:54.379-07:002015-06-24T22:16:54.379-07:00Listening to the 8/7/69 tape, it is definitely not...Listening to the 8/7/69 tape, it is definitely not Phil Lesh on bass. The playing is basic and crude, and done by a very limited player. I presume it is Matthews (unless that was a night Hunter tried out his primitive skills and later forgot).

The 9/18/69 tape is too murky to tell for sure, but where any bass line can be heard, it's so simple I doubt it's Phil. In fact, I have doubts whether there was any bass player at all on 9/18/69 - it could just be the low strings on Dawson's acoustic. Another keen-eared listener would have to check.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-30050174533680093952012-08-15T18:00:45.558-07:002012-08-15T18:00:45.558-07:00Jim, thank you so much for sharing the poster with...Jim, thank you so much for sharing the poster with the Deadhead community.
