Hendrix played three songs (there's some silent film of him there, too). But I've seen no indication the Dead actually played there; nor do I believe they would have played a Leary benefit in 1970, on any date; and I doubt Garcia would show up to hang out in that scene, even if he was back in town with the New Riders that day.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-5351364726042295982023-03-26T17:23:13.386-07:002023-03-26T17:23:13.386-07:00Anon, thanks for this fascinating detail. So while I doubt that "the Dead" showed up (for equipment reasons if nothing else) suddenly Garcia's presence seems plausible. We know that Garcia and Jimi never met (per Jerry), but perhaps they were there the same night, and maybe Garcia played a little with someone. I am not sure if you know the area but one night about thirty years ago my wife and I were walking in Ocean Beach and saw a sign in a small club that said Jefferson Airplane tonight. We looked at each other and said, right, and walked in. Paul Kantner was sitting on a small stool in the middle of an empty room with the rest of the incarnated band including Marty and Skip. I walked right up to him and asked if he would play other side of this life and he said "right o" and launched into the song and set. An intriguing misdate, but page 242 of the Taping Compendium has a lengthy investigation into the mystery 1970 date:
"I found someone in St. Louis who used to work for Velvet Plastic Productions, the company that brought the Dead into town. This guy emceed the April 17, 1969 show at Washington University, and he did not remember the Dead returning in 1970.
"He then sent me this: 'I've made some inquiries at WU about the supposed phantom show there in 1970, and it seems at this point that it never happened! I reviewed documents of the era in the school library with appropriate staff, and even talked by phone with the lady (now retired) who would have known if the Dead had played in Graham Chapel. The consensus seems to be that it never happened! ...The school shut down early for spring break as a result of the tumult that followed Kent State.'
"I confirmed this with another source who went to all the St. Louis shows from 1969 onward. The Grateful Dead did not play on May 19, 1970 in St. Louis."

Yes, but....what about the New Riders on May 13? Assuming they did play, it's interesting that their brief appearance was so thoroughly forgotten. (Maybe nobody knew who they were. The Washington U student paper might not even mention them by name.)
Also curious that Jon McIntire may still have been in New York on May 13, since he was a Washington University graduate (and the Dead's road manager). I'm one of the contestants in the teen beauty pageant and it gets kind of boring being here every day, but there is an assortment of interesting things to see."
Tom Moore, Fremont: "Well, it's all right. The best thing about it is that it gives local bands a chance to play. I'm the drummer in [a band] and we look forward to the battle of the bands on Sunday afternoon."
Bonnie Farmer, Berkeley: "It could be better. Frankly, I was expecting more. The bands are the best thing here. The exhibits don't quite hit it with the teens. But I would come again next year if they had one."
Alan Clement, San Francisco: "I think it's cool. The bands are the best but the beauty pageant swings, too."
Ann Ashley, San Mateo: "I don't know. It's all right I guess. There are not that many older teens here. It's disappointing really. However the Oakland Tribune wasn't interested in naming any bands (except a couple high-school groups in passing), and was more interested in the teen fashion shows and beauty pageants. They made it sound like all the bands were local kids competing in 'battles of the bands.'
(The 3/25/67 Tribune did feature an article about the Mills College rock & roll conference and the Airplane concert there.)

Re: the Cheetah in Santa Monica, a couple articles made it sound like the Aragon had been vacant and unused for a while (at least by rock bands) before reopening as the Cheetah. I wouldn't put too much stock in this though, as the local entertainment listings seem to be unavailable or nonexistent. Could find only a few traces of later shows at the Cheetah either, which goes to show the limits of online searches.
The Cheetah seems to have lasted until summer '68 before going broke; after that the building stood in ruins and burnt down in 1970.
The Aragon had mainly been known for Lawrence Welk's TV broadcasts from there. Amusingly, the final sighting of the old pre-Cheetah Aragon was in a TV special broadcast in April '67 that showed Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass playing there.
