He and the band were becoming somewhat unhappy with each other for various reasons - he felt they didn't give him much input or a role in the music, and they felt he didn't play rock music very well. "The limited input I had with the Dead wasn't getting me off, and it wasn't getting them off either." So they mutually decided to part ways.
“I had an offer to be the composer and musical director of Tarot, which was moving to New York. The prospect of being a bigger fish in a smaller pond was one that I found inviting, so the Dead and I agreed amicably that I would be going on to something else... The meeting in the hotel room in New Orleans [1/30/70] where the plans for our musical parting of the ways were drafted was as cordial and supportive as anyone could imagine under the circumstances... After the discussion about my leaving the band, I went to the gig anyhow through sheer force of habit. In the onsetting numbness, I remember little more than standing behind the amplifiers until Jerry beckoned me to the keyboard with his eyes.”

He remembers the meeting being in New Orleans before the first show, which would explain why he was still there. The "Tarot" project would not move to New York for many more months, though; it was still floating around the Bay Area, and seems to have been rather inchoate at that time, with different bandmembers floating in & out until mid-1970.
Garcia was still involved with the "Tarot" project now & then, and TC was still living with Pigpen, so it was not like a total divorce from the Dead family. Still, he must have felt that being a composer in a musical-theater act would be a lot more fulfilling than his limited place in the Dead, which apparently became both stifling for him and irksome for the others (who complained about his ill-fitting style in later years).Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-22388389584794950182013-10-15T18:01:16.638-07:002013-10-15T18:01:16.638-07:00SDB, my general understanding is that there was a ...SDB, my general understanding is that there was a band meeting and TC was told that it wasn't working out. He in turn said that he had another opportunity, and it was generally agreed that he leave the band. So it was all civil, but he wasn't staying in the band. At the time, the Dead had no money and seemingly few prospects of making any, so going off to work on a New York musical (Tarot) was as good as anything.

In fact, the Dead had so little money (since it turned out Lenny Hart was stealing it) that TC was told he was out of the band in Hawaii but went to New Orleans with the group anyway, I think because they couldn't afford to send him home. I'm not sure of that last detail, but TC was out of the band in New Orleans, but still there, and eventually sat in one night anyway.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-10914391497870446552013-10-15T17:16:54.765-07:002013-10-15T17:16:54.765-07:00I'm interested in TC's being "fired&q...I'm interested in TC's being "fired" by the band, did he state that in his book (which I haven't read)? Deadlists notes that ...About the Honolulu shows...
Deadlists notes that the old Deadbase listed shows from Jan 22 through 26 with the Airplane. (The latest deadbase still lists the 22nd.) "However, articles and ads in the Honolulu Star-Bulletin for 1/22 and 1/24/70 make it clear that there were shows only on the 23rd and 24th, with the opening bands The Sun And The Moon, September Morn, and Pilfredge Sump, with lights by Noah's Ark. The Airplane was definitely not on the bill."

This looks like a case for a prosopographer. Who were these other obscure bands? Where was the Airplane? How did the story of a five-day Honolulu run with the Airplane get started - was one scheduled?

Phil Lesh says he stayed in Hawaii for a week, but of course doesn't go into details about the shows. He then flew to New Orleans, and notes, "The Airplane had been busted in New Orleans just a few weeks before, and we'd had warnings from the musicians and from Bill Thompson, their manager." (McNally also gives this story, with more details.)
This puzzles me, and seems like a false memory - the Airplane hadn't played New Orleans at all recently - and as far as I know, hadn't set foot in Louisiana since the Sep '69 Pop Festival. (Tamarkin's bio doesn't mention any such bust, or a Jan '70 visit to Hawaii.) McNally also strongly implies that the Airplane had not been in Hawaii with the Dead.
(Of course, Casady had been busted in New Orleans back in May '69, and ironically, Kantner was busted in Honolulu in October '69...)Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.com
