A mild exception was a show that you didn't enjoy, 4/22/79 at Spartan Stadium. This was my first outdoor Dead show, and I have strong memories of my one encounter with Bill, telling those in line to "lick the back of the tickets" because that's "where we put the acid." He was smiling as he said it.

There was some rain during the Greg Kihn Band set, and Greg mentioned he's been "talking with some Deadheads back stage," and that the rain should come now and be done. This was largely the case, although there was a brief shower during the Dead's first set. Whether or not it was during "Looks Like Rain" is beyond my powers of recall, but since others have asserted it, I'll believe.

https://lostlivedead.blogspot.com/2014/07/may-27-1989-oakland-coliseum-stadium.html#comment-form

About the Dead's show at Spartan Stadium, you wrote, "a blah show of the same stuff they had been playing." Yeah, maybe. I had last seen them 12/30/78 with Keith and Donna at Pauley Pavilion, and of course this was different to my ears. What I remember most from Spartan was Brent's enthusiasm when singing backups on "I Need A Miracle." This was not too uncommon, we found out as the years rolled by; that day, it really added some energy that Bobby could play off. Same (perhaps) on Good Loving.

The other thing I remember was "Shakedown Street" -- that felt new and energizing as well. I attended with a group of friends who were all from Davis, CA (I was living in L.A. at that time), and David Dodd, of The Annotated Grateful Dead Lyrics, got off a great quip: when they sang "don't tell me this town ain't got no heart," he chirped "San Jose? No way!"

Good times.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-27460111951621263582016-01-22T17:25:24.413-08:002016-01-22T17:25:24.413-08:00And Jerry sat in with Los Lobos for a few tunes th...And Jerry sat in with Los Lobos for a few tunes the night before, I believe....Martyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11229554759896405090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-41811484559216412342016-01-22T17:21:53.609-08:002016-01-22T17:21:53.609-08:00This comment has been removed by the author.MondoMartyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12238036082257753492noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-60782240572462404372015-01-20T20:55:01.063-08:002015-01-20T20:55:01.063-08:00One correction: It was drummer Steve Jordan, not ...One correction: It was drummer Steve Jordan, not bassist Randy Jackson, who co-produced Keith Richards's 1988 album (Talk Is Cheap) and played on the subsequent tour.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03629851675219766819noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-14690318903189775592014-08-28T05:25:21.256-07:002014-08-28T05:25:21.256-07:00Just found this ad that Bob and Jerry did for AIDS...Just found this ad that Bob and Jerry did for AIDS awareness/research that was shot at the show. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=krUUrpScAuA&app=desktopDLeopoldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12539597705353359882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-89029732842338349592014-07-31T17:13:22.393-07:002014-07-31T17:13:22.393-07:00This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.rugged breedhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09336731932861560543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-23101845900089259222014-07-23T18:43:40.012-07:002014-07-23T18:43:40.012-07:00mulebyrd, thanks for the kind words.mulebyrd, thanks for the kind words.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-36433783890429408182014-07-23T16:58:52.629-07:002014-07-23T16:58:52.629-07:00long time read - first time comment. thank you COR...long time read - first time comment. thank you CORRY and JGMF. your knowledge and research are priceless. growin up in the 80's I loved CCR then I seen the DEAD and everythin changed. love the "rock n roll girl" JERRY solo gets me everytime !!! The weather was perfect. Watching Jerry and Bob back up John Fogerty was amazing - all the classic CCR tunes, and Garcia having a blast throughout as a backup guy.

So the Fogerty set was a high-energy, crowd-pleasing rave up. And of course, the majority of the crowd was there for the Grateful Dead, who performed really well at this gig, kicking off with a rare Hell/Fire and playing a very strong if truncated, set.

My strongest memory, however, was of Tracy Chapman's set. She was, you'll recall, wedged in between John Fogerty and the Grateful Dead. And unlike these two 'Rock n Roll Warhorses', she was armed with just herself and an acoustic guitar. And a handful of her own tunes. Not unlike the Dead playing in between the Who and Jimi Hendrix at Monterey Pop. Unlike the Dead, however, Tracy Chapman absolved herself well, and had the entire Oakland Coliseum in the palm of her hand. You could have heard a pin drop. Pretty impressive considering it was late in the day, and the crowd had just witnessed a CCR jam, and was ready - pumped up - for the Grateful Dead to come on.

It was a drop of solemnity and reflection on a day when the music was more of a celebration. I wonder if anyone else shares that memory.corpslavehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08627187383851083172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-3050401997177600352014-07-05T23:38:10.846-07:002014-07-05T23:38:10.846-07:00And Garcia's sit-in with him on that occasion,...And Garcia's sit-in with him on that occasion, perhaps.Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-87101059959257780752014-07-05T17:45:04.038-07:002014-07-05T17:45:04.038-07:00A correspondent pointed out that brother Tom Foger...A correspondent pointed out that brother Tom Fogerty died in 1990 due to AIDS that was caused by a blood transfusion, just one of many tragedies in the early decades of AIDS. It is very likely that John Fogerty was aware of this in May 1989, even if the general public was not. Thus John's appearance at the AIDS Benefit may have had a very personal component as well.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-17385518977169144332014-07-05T10:13:32.066-07:002014-07-05T10:13:32.066-07:00Clarence played with the boys on 12/31/88Clarence played with the boys on 12/31/88JASIIIhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16048727281950385523noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-27657348389676959582014-07-04T16:46:10.211-07:002014-07-04T16:46:10.211-07:00Excellent.

Dylan told Fogerty “that he must start playing “Proud Mary” or people would “start thinking that Ike and Tina Turner wrote it”. http://njnnetwork.com/2011/01/the-day-bob-dylan-helped-john-fogarty-perform-ccr-again/DLeopoldhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12539597705353359882noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-52454161120510806342014-07-03T10:18:34.918-07:002014-07-03T10:18:34.918-07:00Creedence also famously followed the Dead onstage ...Creedence also famously followed the Dead onstage in the middle of the night at Woodstock. cryptdevhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13944617292210813801noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-60963524931220396592014-07-03T09:23:48.504-07:002014-07-03T09:23:48.504-07:00Also, the Dead's setlist is fairly uninspired....Also, the Dead's setlist is fairly uninspired.
