Probably hard to disentagle these things, of course, but I always found the difference between the Casady-Garcia-Hart power trio configuration from Olompali in late July and the tempo études of October to be rather jarring, so this would be right in the transition period. A prefiguration of David and the Dorks!Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-47910967588847042014-05-02T20:53:53.406-07:002014-05-02T20:53:53.406-07:00I had not considered the possibility that Garcia a...I had not considered the possibility that Garcia and Lesh were auditioning for the Hartbeats, rather than the Dead. It's a very interesting proposition. Nonetheless, it's hard to deny that they were playing with other guitarists, if just to see what was out there.

In the liner notes to the cd re-release of a 1968 album called Miss Butters, by The Family Tree, lead singer Bob Segarini says that Garcia suggested that he consider joining the Dead around '68. Segarini presents it as a sort of casual backstage remark (along the lines of "hey, man, you sound great, you should sing for us"), but to me it is another sign that Garcia and Lesh were restless with the Dead as constituted.Corry342https://www.blogger.com/profile/08049035074121231425noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-86102272395154088782014-05-02T20:27:14.135-07:002014-05-02T20:27:14.135-07:00At last, a post on this!
This was going to be par...At last, a post on this!
This was going to be part of a forthcoming post of mine, but I'm glad you've written it up.

From the evidence, it does look like a serious audition-type session, not just a casual jam. I suspect that Garcia & Lesh were not openly "auditioning," though, but just playing with a few different guitarists (here & in the Hartbeats) and seeing how well things went.
Note that Vic says, "No one ever said anything to me about maybe joining the Dead;" and Crosby has never mentioned it either.
Garcia & Lesh could also have had in mind starting a new, non-Dead band to play "on the side" (as the Hartbeats would do in October). They may have been thinking of other guitarists for this other project - not to replace Weir in the Dead.

This was right in the period when Weir & Pigpen's position was the shakiest - the shows on 9/20 and 9/22 were, I think, the Dead's only gigs between the 9/2 festival show and a 10/5 appearance in Sacramento. So on top of the band's internal dissensions, they barely played any shows for a month. (They also started the Aoxomoxoa sessions in September.)
Things seem to have been patched up with Weir & Pigpen by mid-October, though.

Unfortunately, Lemieux has only shared the brief Clementine jam from the session, and there's no information yet on what else was taped (or how long the session went). The rest of the tape would be gold, at least to know what material they were jamming on.

Crosby has said, "I first met them when they were still living at 710, but we didn’t play that time. I just hung out with them, talked, and liked them a lot... I knew they were kindred spirits immediately. I started playing with them early on, when Mickey joined the band, and they had the place up in Novato."
(The Dead moved to the Novato warehouse in September '68.)Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-52654960868084866012014-05-02T05:56:42.356-07:002014-05-02T05:56:42.356-07:00I think Croz claims to have visited them when they...I think Croz claims to have visited them when they still lived at 710 Ashbury.Fate Musichttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05648291938690043423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-67051874359108298562014-05-01T21:14:45.767-07:002014-05-01T21:14:45.767-07:00Fabulous post.
