Used to jump on the trampoline on the porch with John Dawson.<br />Billy Kreutzmann and Bob Matthews were in my class in ‘58-‘60, taught by Bob Newton from Melbourne, and Ed Cormack the following year when Bob Matthews came. My sister, Peninsula ‘58 hung out with Jerry at St Michael’s alley. They had a great time! Loved when Joan came to play! Such an exquisite voice! We students were all leading ordinary lives! He didn't talk to little brother much about things back in those early & mis-60s, but I gathered something interesting was going on & later took in a lot of what the hip scene in Palo Alto & Menlo Park was. I can only wish I'd been closer to his age. What a time it was. But of course, I turned Hip/hippie myself eventually in ’66 at 15, only I ended up living in the East Bay with my parents. Mom would take me along to visit Stephen still living in Palo Alto. He was head waiter At St Mike’s & living with Vernon Gates the owner. I would surmise anyone/everyone in the Menlo/PA scene passed thru the doors at the popular hangout eventually. I gathered too that most men those days had crushes on Joan Baez! Joan lived for a while next to Ira Sandperl in College Terrace where I grew up, & we saw them drive or bike by our house on California Ave. many times. Stephen hung out on Perry Lane & Keplers too. He eventually peddled LSD for Stanley Owsley too. My sister Juliet was friends with Pig Pen (Ron) & he played on our piano a time or two. I always wanted to move back to Palo Alto, as Hayward was a bit dullsville in comparison. Fortunately, we Hayward heads had Berkeley to the North for some dullsville relief. Stephen would move to Ben Lomond near Santa Cruz to commune & I woud cut school & visit him & his GF there. It's so interesting reading so much about the history that was "urban legend" by the time I was lurking around at Discount Records, Guitars Unlimited, Essex Records, Kepler's, and whatnot in the late 70s. It's kind of sad to read the repeating theme, "it was torn down and replaced with [condos, office buildings, whatever]." Gentrification - my mom calls it the "Palo-Alto-ization" of Menlo Park. We used to play the game, "what did this used to be?" but now there's hardly a thing I recognize. The stories will survive, while the buildings were temporary. Also enjoyed Sean Feder's comment - my first thought about Peninsula School was oh yeah! Augie Feder went there, and then here's his older brother reminiscing about seeing Jerry play at the school festival. :)Jenny Kalthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17508258133291324814noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-70258752590427796532018-08-01T14:47:35.891-07:002018-08-01T14:47:35.891-07:00Yep. Saw many films there as a youngster, but never had the privilege of hearing Hedges play there later. Kepler's I hung out at quite a bit, but would've been later in the 60s (maybe 2nd location). I was in Menlo Park recently on business and had some spare time, so I used this post as a guide for a walking/driving tour of some of the sites you describe. It's amazing (and a little sobering) how much everything has changed in the past several decades with the gentrification of Silicon Valley. One update: a photo posted recently on Facebook confirms that Magoo's Pizza was at 639 Santa Cruz. Long-time MP residents commented that the business on the corner that is now the Left Bank restaurant was the Menlo Theater.Jeffhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08297035229700241672noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-36918140104745984532014-07-06T16:45:09.242-07:002014-07-06T16:45:09.242-07:00I'll send you one via e-mail to see if it work...I'll send you one via e-mail to see if it works.
