I took for granted that it was correct, but the contemporary accounts I've seen make it clear that the Dead played on Friday night Sep 30 in the Commons, then on Saturday night Oct 1 in the women's gym (with the Only Alternative). The festival ended early Sunday morning and I haven't seen any hint that there were more shows later that day.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-21976595551426305312024-03-15T06:52:15.830-07:002024-03-15T06:52:15.830-07:00Jann Wenner wrote a piece on Leary's talks in ...Jann Wenner wrote a piece on Leary's talks in his last column in the Daily Californian, 2/2/67:
https://digicoll.lib.berkeley.edu/record/55596 ("Our Full Attention," p.7)

He covers Friday Jan 27 at Berkeley (with the Outfit & Big Brother) and Sat Jan 28 at Winterland (with Jefferson Airplane), and says they were "a mixed bag."
"I saw the Berkeley one, and people who saw both or went to the Saturday night one at Winterland thought the latter was superior. For one thing, the rock and roll (which precedes and follows the sermon) was played better... Leary felt that the Berkeley show was not that good: he was tired from spending 12 hours the day before making a movie... The Berkeley crowd was practically all adults, the intellectually hip type. Those people can bring anybody down.
"As show biz, the 'Death of the Mind' left a lot to be desired. Tim speaks quietly and softly. There wasn't any running around or jumping up and down. It wasn't the Fillmore or Avalon; those who might have expected that should have been disappointed. The rock and roll bands were not there for dancing, but for something more spiritual."
Wenner admits Leary's sermon can be rather dull, but says "the trip itself is a good one," and has high praise for the light show: "super-sophisticated, not at at all like the local liquid projection shows which are not oriented to much other than the beat of the music. This light show had a story and was also the closest representation of the hallucinations of LSD that I've ever seen."

Since Wenner had been proselytizing LSD in the pages of the Daily Cal for the past year himself, he took a keen interest in Leary's approach. As far as the music, Janis "sounds like she's out to kill," but Wenner did not like the Outfit. He probably would have been more complimentary had he gone to the Airplane's night, but I wonder how the rock bands were supposed to be "spiritual" to an audience of seated, snoozing academics.Light Into Asheshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06943335142002007213noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-13316630688128792852024-03-12T14:39:30.349-07:002024-03-12T14:39:30.349-07:00The IRS did not seize the proceeds from the festiv...The IRS did not seize the proceeds from the festival. I’m just really curious why Kemper would be replaced when I always felt like he was phenomenal with JGB. not sure if I’ve listened to any other shows with Donny on drums but honestly I could tell something was off pretty quickly listening to the 3/4/95 show and that is the reason I went looking to see if there was A drummer change or guest for that show. Would love to hear any information about the lineup change if anyone knows anything about it. Thanks for all the info here. Full alcoholic beverages open from 10 AM till 2 AM every night seven days and nights a week for a little over 20 years. We had a live dance bands over 18 years in a row seven nights a week never missed a night that’s over 7000 nights in a row a world record I’m sure. We never missed an evening with a live dance band for that 7000 nights in a row through bomb scares power outages and the like . I remember one Monday night which was our concert night with national acts the power went out at 6 PM and didn't come back on till after midnight in the region. We had country Joe McDonald booked and we had a house piano. So he put his man on keyboards Joe was on acoustic and a drumer of course lotta hand percussions some harmonies loaded the house with candles those little globe red and orange candles that were so common in nightclubs at that time we took a dozen cases out of our store room loaded up the walkways and the bathrooms and the entrance The bartenders worked out of the registers because we had mechanical handles for them the older NCR 1900s known as the tombstone registers it was a great show quite an event and our record was not broken that was at about year 12 then we went on with another eight years until we finally closed in December 1989 with five dance bands every night for over 18 years The first couple of years of our twenty we were open 5 nights but did not have a band on Sunday or Monday For the last four or five years we had two or three acts on Friday nights because we did get the Silicon Valley crowd after work and on into the evening as you stated for several years we had James Lee Reeves play from 5 to 7 with an act on at 7:15 with a quick change that played at 10:30 but another band on at 1015 that played to 1:45 The bands were only working about three hours instead of the normal four so they only took a couple 10 minute breaks That was a full evening of music I am at nobullschmidt@hotmail.com let’s talkAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-11112771690961845682024-02-20T13:23:28.926-08:002024-02-20T13:23:28.926-08:00There is one tape of What Was That on Archive sear...There is one tape of What Was That on Archive search KSAN.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5493557313410969282.post-22859073323732289172024-02-11T11:06:57.537-08:002024-02-11T11:06:57.537-08:00John Hagen was a very good friend and had many oth...John Hagen was a very good friend and had many other enlightening stories of the Greatful Dead and the phenomenon that are/were Desdheads!! It almost doubled the normally 2 hour drive. Upon getting inside the venue we were informed that our great seats that our friends camped out to get when tickets went on sale, were now at the back of the venue. The promoters, University of Tulsa student association, did not realise how far the stage would come out into the arena and now our seats were terrible. At least that is what we were told. Keith was not well and the sound in the Pavilion was awful. Keith was let go about 11 days later after playing the Rock for Life show, I think it was called. All in all it was great to see the band in my hometown, but it was right up there with my worst Dead shows ever. Some of which include, April Fool’s in Memphis 1995 and most certainly, Gate Crashers Suck Show at Deer Creek July 2, 1995 which unfortunately was my last show. Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com
